Of the four mandatory components of an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, the cornerstone is the Strategic Plan.
While the Human Resources, Capital, Energy and any other Plan your Community Government chooses to include, address specific areas, all are tied together under an umbrella Strategic Plan.
Without this coordinated look at all the planning that is being done by your government, it's difficult to get a clear picture of how each plan connects, interacts and integrates with the other.
- Susan Coyne, Sustainability Coordinator
The planning process is about taking a clear look at your community's situation, problems and solutions, and figuring out a series of actions to reach priority goals. Strategic planning focuses on developing a broad vision and specific goals, strategies and actions that will have the most impact.
But Strategic Planning in the community context is not an exercise for someone sitting at a desk. Successful strategic plans are effective only when residents and organizations have an opportunity to contribute. Therefore, successful strategic planning is a collaborative process that draws partners and stakeholders together to create and work towards a community integrated approach.
Integrated approaches are used to drive the development of community priorities and specific actions needed to turn the vision into reality.
To assist Community Governments, the NWTAC partnered with the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs to develop the ICSP Toolkit, a computerize strategic planning tool. It's available free of charge for use by any NWT Community Government. Please note that this file is very large (35 MB) and may take a long time to download. If you would like to receive a copy on a CD, please Contact Susan for more information. You will be promoted to Run or Save the file. Please select Save to download the file on your computer. NOTE: You will require a key code to unlock the tool for installation and use. The key is available from Susan.
