OCTOBER 8, 2009 - Which NWT communities are best suited for increased use of wood pellets for space heating? The AEA study concludes that bulk wood pellets represent a cheaper and less polluting heating source than fossil fuels in all communities with road access.

Community Energy Planning (CEP) helps a community identify and address its energy needs.
The purpose of the CEP is to help the community achieve a variety of benefits, including lower cost energy, improved energy efficiency, cleaner air and economic development opportunities.
Using principles such as sustainability, affordability, and environmental preservation, communities engage in a multi-step planning process to identify and evaluate how energy is used in the community (energy demand) and how that energy is supplied to the community (energy supply).
The Arctic Energy Alliance is available to help communities create and implement Community Energy Plans. AEA has been working with some of the largest and smallest communities in the NWT over the last few years and have used that experience to produce a CEP toolkit for NWT communities.
AEA is a not-for-profit society established in 1997 to assist communities, the territorial government, business and consumers to work together to reduce the costs and the environmental impact of energy use and utility services in the NWT.
The AEA website includes samples of completed Community Energy Plans, a link to download the CEP toolkit and more.
