A community responsibility

Whether your community is building a water treatment plant, walking trail, skating rink or community hall, Capital Planning is one of the most important jobs of any Community Government. Developing a Capital Plan is also one of four mandatory components of completing an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan.

The challenge is how to prioritize needs because not all needs can be met with available resources.

It's Council's job, working with Administration, to set priorities based upon community needs and budget limitations.

Deciding which projects to undertake involves understanding not only now much something will cost to build, but what it will take to operate and maintain and the consequences on other infrastructure.

In 2007-2008, Community Governments gained authority for community public infrastructure. Each community receives a share of $28 million in Capital Funding from the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs based upon Formula Funding.
