Sustainable communities conference
2006
Yellowknife, November 22-24, 2006
Visit this page for updates on the upcoming 2006 Sustainable Community Planning Conference. On behalf of the Northwest Territories Association of Communities (NWTAC) and the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), we are pleased to invite representatives from each community to attend a Sustainable Community Planning Conference from November 22 to 24, 2006.
Through financial assistance from MACA, the NWTAC will reimburse related travel expenses incurred for one elected official and one Senior staff person from each community to attend the event. If additional members of your community government wish to attend, they are more than welcome to register for the event, but the costs will have to be covered by your community government.
The conference will focus on some key initiatives. First of all, we will be presenting options for an Integrated Community Sustainability Planning framework for review and direction by community governments. This framework is a requirement of the Federal Gas Tax program, and must be completed by March 31, 2007.
Secondly, the conference will provide some practical tools on Community Energy Planning and celebrate some of the successful NWT initiatives that have been undertaken to allow communities to access more sustainable sources of energy and reduce their long-term dependence on non-renewable resources as well as reduce energy costs. The Arctic Energy Alliance is a key partner of the NWTAC and MACA in this regard and will be leading this event during the conference.
Finally, there will be a number of sessions to present best practices and ideas for communities in terms of capital planning, innovative technologies and recreation planning as communities and MACA prepare for implementation of the New Deal for NWT Communities in April of 2007.
As an aside, this conference has been coordinated with the dates for the Local Government Administrators of the NWT Annual General Meeting, scheduled for November 21, 2006. All Senior Administrative Officers/Band Managers are encouraged to attend the AGM. As part of the AGM, LGANT will also be hosting a workshop on the Community Government Human Resource Development – Wage & Benefit Survey Analysis Project.
An agenda and further details on the conference will be circulated as they become available. At this time, communities are encouraged to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements. After which, expense claims can be submitted to NWTAC for reimbursement.
If you require further information on these arrangements, please contact Brian Desjardins, NWTAC Manager of Communications and Special Projects at 873-8359 or brian@nwtac.com.
As well, please feel free to also contact your MACA Regional Superintendent for more information
Sincerely,Gordon Van Tighem Michael McLeod
