Municipal and Community Affairs latest Capacity Building Conference, “Strengthening Communities – From Policy to Practice” is scheduled for April 11-13, 2007 at the Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife.  Building on the momentum of the November 2006 conference, the April conference provides a venue for the final discussion and approval of the Northwest Territories Integrated Community Sustainability Plan template. This conference will assist communities in preparing for formal implementation of the New Deal for NWT Community Governments, specific to the roles and responsibilities of communities, councils and staff.  In addition to the exchange of best practices at the territorial and national levels, topics will include implementation of Integrated Community Sustainability Planning and next steps; and New Deal for NWT Community Governments related topics including capital planning; innovation project management; community strategic investments; capital investment plans; property taxation; land administration; and capacity building.  Funding assistance may be applied for through the Community Development Fund. Mr. Michael Haynes, celebrated national author on Canada’s hiking trails. Michael plans to take some pictures and report on the Frame Lake Trail.

Governance Resource Centre will be open in the Janvier Room in the dining area from 10:00am – 4:00pm daily.  Services and resources to include Community Capacity Building Fund update, Cyber Café, presenter handouts, meeting areas, and Governance training resources.

MACA Staff are available on request for individual and small group discussions/orientations to New Deal initiatives.
